Muppet fans rejoice! From the ashes of FAO Schwartz going down the tubes, Toys R Us gained their exclusivity on the toy I bought Somara at the end of 2008. There’s a slight difference between ours. Somara’s Blanche (the winning name from 2009) has her features permanently glued on: eyes, hair and nose. Mine (codenamed Phil in honor of Phil Hartman because he was an awesome chameleon) has interchangeable hair, eyes and nose plus a mustache. Certainly reminds me of the most popular Muppet Playskool or Fisher Price offered in the Seventies but my brother’s Count was easier to operate than my Bert; that damned poly-whatever stuff, moving Bert’s mouth was a bigger workout than a Nautilus.
Back to my Whatnot.
Besides the interchangeable features from the Toys R Us run, they sell additional outfits which we couldn’t resist. I believe our excuse was find a way to have our nephew Wyatt demonstrate his directing skills by making little movies. You’ll have to wait to see what we picked up and have in mind with Blanche and “Phil.” No wait, the business suit is one since Whatnots are now sold au naturel. Ok, you’ll have to anticipate the remained of their wardrobe. Somara discovered they also can wear baby clothes, ages 6-9 months.
This brings me to the heart of the post. We are holding another contest to see who can come up with the best name for my Whatnot. Last time’s winner was Helen so she’s ineligible, I want to give other people a crack. (Helen, if we acquire a third Muppet, you’re back in the running.) One thing which helps in the judging, have a good story on why the name works. Of course there will be a prize worth $20, unless Helen can remind me on what she received. It won’t be cash, it’ll be in the form of a gift card or equivalent. If you have children, let them try first, their entries tend to be amusing. Finally, post your entry in the Comments section, e-mails and Facebook won’t count.
Good luck and remember, The Muppets hits stores in DVD form on March 20!
I am being penalized for my creativity? Hmmmph! I guess I will have to see what Jack comes up with since he tends to give things funny names like his fish “Little Jeff” or the cat he named Swag. It would be really hard to beat my entry from last time since the name was based on a neighbor from my youth.
Anchormuppet: The Legend of Ron Magenta
Here’s my two cents.
Maurice Ankerman. ’cause he looks like a news anchor from the Seventies and seems like a Eugene or a Maurice.
Lil’ Alex has been watching Sesame Street this weekend…I need to get one of these! He seems to really like several of the puppets, especially the monsters!
And on a side note…I actually still like that show…made me laugh more then once…I was surprised
I love the Muppets. Since the puppet comes with all interchangeable features, it reminds me of that toy in the Seventies, “HUGO – The Man of a Thousand Faces” but with the new HUGO movie which I have yet to see, I don’t know if you like that name…
I do like the checkered suit and have to say, “WINK MARTINDALE” comes to mind…I like that name better…Blanche and Wink, from Wauwatosa. 🙂
Herbert J. Whitebread
Anna and Eddie named him “Mobert.”
His name is Bernie. He looks kinda like Bert, but really like Ernie, so he’s Bernie. I hope he has the worst character flaws of each of them put together.
