Where are now? Let’s see three Mac Minis and a virtualized server for hosting and two different Weblog solutions. I’ve lost track how long I’ve been with WordPress but when I made the belated jump to the Weblog format, it was to get better at Mac OS X Server 10.4’s solution provided by “blossom,” which wasn’t terribly good. It was susceptible to runaway Java issues and Apple ditched it when 10.5 debuted.
There are days I miss making the magazine/newspaper knockoffs but physical media continues to decline en masse with maybe the exception of vinyl. Plus, I wanted to make this incarnation more interactive which I’d say the Weblog really failed to do at fewer than 600 official comments it has accumulated. I can safely guess there’d be more if my friends or honest strangers didn’t have to undertake the pain-in-the-ass process of having an account. I can thank all the furgin’ Chinese, Russian and other enemies of honest discussion for this as they generate noise about Ugg boots or boner pills.
The real sad thing is how all these gadgets we own haven’t given us more free time to stay in touch. If they’ve done anything, they’ve sucked up what little we did have. It’s something Douglas Coupland mocked 23 years ago in Girlfriend in a Coma and he was writing the book, Western culture was still on dial-up, pagers and fax machines.
Well, I’m going to keep pushing, posting my reviews, stories, whatever like messages in a bottle floating out into the Internet Ocean, hoping they get a thoughtful response. Let’s see if I can continue another 15 years too. Oy! I’ll be 66 then. Well, in 2005, I wasn’t keen on seeing myself doing this at 51 neither.
