Four years of Picayune as a ‘blog

Around this weekend four years ago, I took the overdue plunge to have my “magazine” converted from plain HTML-driven website to ‘blog driven. Hopefully it has been worth it for everyone who reads. I tried to keep it civil, open and more along the lines of a magazine and/or letter. Web-based stuff can been trickier when good ol’ print was impressive: designs, layouts, graphics, fonts, etc. It’s much like making the shift in art/packaging for 12″ albums to the 5″ CDs. Course vinyl is making a comeback…if you believe those two windbags in Chicago.

Backing up went quite quickly yesterday at work too. Everything on the Mini squeezed down to 42 GB. The trickier part would restoring everything right after I make one new post. I definitely need to look into a solution for the SQL element (Jeremy said this is how WordPress operates).

This morning was a bit more trying…upgrading from WordPress 2.7.1 to the current 2.8. I have to relearn that every time since I’m always behind the curve there. Once I had everything in its proper place, the creator pulled through on one major peeve I was having in 2.7; every time I wanted to change the color to a link’s text, it would change the size of the type instead. Originally I thought it was the new Safari 4 but downgrading to 3.x or trying Firefox 3.x proved to be futile. Safari 3.x on a 10.4.11 system worked yet I wasn’t going to do an Archive & Install on my MacBook for a relatively minor stylistic issue. The next part I’m watching for is my collapsing archive element continuing to be rendered properly too.

Enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend. I know I’m going to try. My first vacation of 2009 kicks off in about a week! There will be more stories until I have to get on the plane.
