DriveSavers’ initial results

I received various level of news this week from a couple sources while the site continues to be in limbo. I have been making a spreadsheet for the stories I am missing out on, maybe I should crib from Tolkien now that The Hobbit is on the horizon, create a section called The Lost Tales to cover the downtime. Maybe.

  • The bad news: DriveSavers said the hard drive had physical/mechanical damage. Knowing their success rate, it translates into the cost being closer to the high-end of the quote. Currently $1700. Next week will be the next update on where the technicians are.
  • The good news: I only have to pay if DriveSavers is successful in saving the data I want. I’m going for all the contents at this point, it might be bootable. Jeremy sends it’s unlikely. The minimal goal is the var directory where WordPress keeps the lion’s share of data.
  • The better news: Should the main data point is recovered, I pondered how to get it re-integrated with the operational setup my server is running from now. I did some research and asked around on some restoration tactics. I can’t recall if I thought of it or someone suggested the rsync command. Either way, I conducted a test involving the operational database into a guinea pig operating from an older setup. Success. Now to wait on pins and needles for another darn week.
