As the chapter closes on what was called the Backyard Cats series, a new one opens with the official adoption of the cat behind all the stories…Princess. That is the name the kids on the other side of the fence gave her or referred to her by. Now she is my cat because the neighbors don’t take care of the poor thing. Some days Princess was starving. Other times she just wanted attention. Getting pregnant the third tim was the final straw.
Today, Somara picked Princess up from the AHS. She was still groggy from today’s spaying operation but the meowing in the car kicked in pretty quickly. We’ve moved her indoors to recuperate and keep the stitches clean. She remains in the big cage for protection from Miette, Kuroneko and primarily Nemo. When I went to get other things from the car, her boyfriend was on the roof probably hoping to get another date.
I know I promised I wouldn’t get another cat until Miette passed away and last night I went over my opus to Molly, welled up some. However, cats are cunning creatures. They often make the decision about where they’re going to live with their charming personalities and/or affectionate ways. Another cat will inevitably fill the vacuum Princess leaves in the backyard yet we’ll make sure one less animal will suffer from neglect, hunger and thirst.
Oh yeah, she may resemble Molly in the photo but there are several key differences. Princess has some orange distributed through her fur, her temperament is very mellow and she doesn’t mind being cradled like a baby.
To commemorate her adoption, Princess deserves a new, more appropriate name. Please vote in the poll. Let me give a quick explanation for each choice:
- Toci (pronounced TOH-see): The Aztec goddess who was the mother of the gods. I figured something Mexican worked due this being Texas.
- Isis: The Egyptian goddess who was also a mother-like figure. Since four of her 11 children were named after Egyptian rulers, I thought, why not. It’s also Catwoman’s pet in the Nineties cartoon.
- Buttercup: This was her working title until I learned that the neighbors “owned” her and the kids called her Princess. Plus last year when I met the kitty, it was the 25th anniversary of The Princess Bride.
