Our “super” evening with the Austin Symphony Orchestra

batmobile89Tonight we check out a reading of Archer with the principle cast, hopefully they’ll be as funny as the show. I figure they’re also here because Fun Fun Fest kicks off this weekend.

Last month we attended the ASO for their performances of pieces based upon superhero films, usually the opening number. Wearing a costume was encouraged and this included various members in the orchestra. Seeing the kids dressed up as Batman or Wolverine is always amusing since they’re way into it. How I remember my Spider-Man obsession in early grade school.

I need to check out things like ASO more often. I had forgotten how exciting while simultaneously soothing a classical/symphonic performance is live.

ASO covered mostly expected numbers: Danny Elfman’s Batman and Spider-Man, thankfully John Williams’ “Superman March,” I would’ve felt gypped otherwise! Van Helsing was a stretch. There was X-Men 2, The Fantastic Four, Captain America and Supergirl. The cool surprises were the piano solo tune from The Incredible Hulk TV show, The Incredibles which has a Sixties spy vibe to it and “Ghostbusters” for the encore.

I hope ASO does this every October. The costume element really suits the music and gets kids to come out.

Next up? We’ll have to think it over some. Somara mentioned interest in Verdi or whatever. ASO is gonna’ have to wait until the car matters settle out.
