The noose finally began to tighten against General Lee (who should be remembered as a traitor in the same vein as Bowe Bergdahl, Benedict Arnold and Kim Philby) as General Grant’s attrition tactics were paying off. The Confederate forces had been declining, probably from losses and desertions, while the Federal army continued to grow. So now Grant began to make his move into Lee’s left flank to prevent the Traitors’ escape. By April 1, Lee had no choice but pull his forces out of their trenches and flee west. No dice. Grant captured Lee by April 9, ending the war.
Sadly this only ended the Civil War on the battlefield. One hundred and fifty years later, we Yankees are still fighting with what is politely called Dixieland. Southerners before and after our Civil War have a well-earned reputation for being sore losers.
