Day One: My Apple Watch

mywatchThe timing was perfect! Somara and I received our watches on the same day despite my order being placed several weeks earlier. This gave us the opportunity to configure them together. The new 1.01 update was already in place.

What I considered the first full day with mine began the following morning because I wanted to give it the opportunity to measure the health elements more accurately. This on the first day has been a mixed bag.

Configuring was all I completed. Which watch face? Which complications did I want (as you can see, the date in the upper right, current conditions on the bottom and my activity/movement in the upper left). The red dot you see now means it’s recharging By default it synchronized all the applications from my iPhone 5 that were Watch™ ready. Once it was in place I put it into a low-powered state to avoid messing up my fresh start on Friday.

Initially I was annoyed by how the watch face awakens every time I brought my left wrist near my face: blowing my nose, covering my mouth when I cough, etc. Halfway through the day I figured out how to turn it off and require a tap, this saves on the battery life. The key application I was trying to appease and keep accurate is Activity. Based upon the data I gave it as per my Widgets I often modify on the site, it says I should move about enough to consume 430 calories, stand up from sitting (allegedly, sitting is the new cancer) to take a one-minute breather 12 times a day (a breeze especially when you have a weak bladder as I do and I’m trying consume four liters of water daily) and as per every doctor, partake in 30 minutes of exercise.

The move I aced and lapped it for 944 by the time the clock struck midnight. Stand was another low-hanging-fruits victory with 17. When work ended, I decided to see how the Exercise element would go. This is where I disagree and I’m probably not operating it correctly. I ran (not contiguously) and climbed the height of the Transamerica Building for a total of 35-plus minutes. The watch said, nah, I calculate 22 give or take the walk to the gym and back. Good thing I also have a spreadsheet tracking the history of my exercise (namely running) since 2011 began. There is a Workout app I need find the instructions on, see if it dovetails into Activity. Oh yeah, when Friday concluded, I allegedly made 12,052 steps for a distance of 6.84 miles. I guess we walk great distances via casual activity and aren totally oblivious.

Nelson was the inaugural recipient of a phone call. I got his voice mail. Better luck next time. Text messages are limited to some stock replies, good, I have fat fingers. I’m looking to see how to customize these. Somara and I do enjoy sending each other doodles. They can substitute for text messages as we write inside jokes.

Next up, the report when I get to one week.
