Drive-by Truckers

Caught this band a couple weeks ago at Stubb’s. (Yes, I know, I’m running behind with my stories/events but I’m pre-occupied with Las Vegas and other events.)

Pretty good-sized crowd. As for me, I started checking out their material through former member Jason Isbell who I stumbled upon through a Guided By Voices tribute and Marc Maron interview. Curiosity into the Truckers grew stronger through primary singer/writer Patterson Hood’s time with Maron and his contribution to a Replacements tribute.

For the uninformed, what do the Drive-By Truckers sound like? I’d say just plain Rock/Pop with the singers having stronger (American) Southern accents.  They cover all kinds of topics too, it’s not redneck stuff you’d expect from Skynyrd or worse. Their Austin set list is here. I couldn’t stay to the end because I didn’t want to miss the train home. I did catch their covers of the Ramones and John Lennon. They’re pretty energetic live.

I’d recommend them if you like the Mavericks, Steve Earle and/or Dwight Yoakum.
