Yesterday, my friends Alaire and Tom had to say goodbye to their last remaining kitty and good friend Angel. It was sad for me too because I had known the furry little guy all his life too. Angel amazingly lived as long as Nemo (17), a rare thing given that most male domestic indoor cats live between 12-14 years on average.
Although I wasn’t his favorite human, some cats are fickle and/or only bond with particular people, I thought the world of Angel. There were nights he would eventually capitulate by cuddling my lap…the power of persistence! Other times, he treated me like his babysitter/step parent. The most memorable demonstration of this behavior was the most stressful Summer evening I can remember in the last 20 years. Angel and Tiki snuck out of the house which was dangerous for them thanks to coyotes roaming around northwest Austin. Tiki was always easy to catch, he would grow tired of the “chase me” game within 10-20 minutes and you’d could grab him. Angel decided to just keep his distance in the dark, dark open areas meowing his version of “You’re not my dad!” How I worried and feared he’d meet a horrible fate. Obviously he survived. He was as cunning as he was stubborn.
Farewell you little furball. May you have numerous comfy spots on the celestial couch beside your brothers Jack, Tiki and Shadow. Give Nemo a cat high five with his good paw.
