Watch out! Austin-based tarantulas are trying to score!

In my 30 years of living in Austin, I have only seen tarantulas twice in the open. Once in late 1998 while it was trying to cross the street at this house I was renting a room in and then I think roughly 10-15 years ago outside the Lowrys’ place in the evening. Ugly is an understatement about them. However, I know they’re pretty harmless here and they are more deathly afraid of us than the other way around. Tarantulas have a good sense of scale was what I always thought. KUT put out a story explaining more on why people need to be more informed of their increased activity during the Summer. I think overdevelopment is a big reason too as the influx of morons from California, Florida and Arizona swarm what few resources we have left, killing the arachnids’ habitats. I had no idea they ‘taste’ the ground as their true means of getting around. I figured they had crap eyesight and lack Peter Parker’s Spidey Sense. If they did, I think the males would know how they’re on the menu after getting it on with the females.
