Before I give a ranting endorsement I urge you to first, support your local comic book and/or game store by finding out if they do their own podcast. Not everyone can drop by every week like I can to chew the fat with the staff you’ve grown to know over a decade.
As a quick aside, what I get to enjoy reminds me of what my grandfather would do whenever he went to the hardware section at Sears; he was a precursor to Hank Hill.
Back to the point!
My nearby comic book and game shop is Rogues Gallery. Located in Round Rock it was formerly Dragon’s Lair North but DL’s owner sold it to his staff there, probably as a gift or nice gesture. It couldn’t have been a move to cut his losses because RG has been successful for years. Recently they got into the podcasting realm. Sure many say its crowded yet I don’t care. A terrestrial-based radio show for my store or those aligned with them is unrealistic despite AM/FM being the realm of the old farts who rammed the Beatles down my throat in the Eighties. I love the Roguecast. It demonstrates the power of podcasting by how well Randy, Nick, Teela, David and Chelsea can cater to their patrons with a civil discussion about the merits of Firefly, Pacific Rim, Doctor Who, Marvel, DC, Image, D&D’s alternatives and numerous board games. They even mention non-geek programs like HBO’s The Newsroom and Disney’s Frozen. As they say at the opening, Pop Culture on the radar.
I have my differences over some topics with the hosts. None are deal breakers, it’s opinion and more often the gang has convinced me to check out the lesser-known comic books they sell: Afterlife with Archie (yes, the Archie gang is caught in the Zombie Apocalypse), Velvet (Awesome spy-thriller action set in the Seventies), Sex Criminals (don’t let the title fool you, it’s pretty intelligent) and Mythic Adventures for Pathfinder.
OK, their marketing ploy is working on my weak mind! I don’t feel that way though. It’s more like being the fly on the wall of a conversation I wish I were participating in, chewing the fat over the junk I enjoy! Besides, sometimes a verbal review is more effective of conveying its point than in print or electrons. The gang also wouldn’t endorse a product they don’t like.
Check them out here if your local comic and hobby store doesn’t have its own podcast.
