I didn’t get into Johnny’s music with his band Savuka until I was nearing graduation from Marquette. The band had a pretty good appearance on SNL and I think Milwaukee’s smooth jazz station would play “Take My Heart Away” so I scored the solo record around 1993 which had the hit “These Days.” I gained a greater appreciation for the South African influences when I moved to Austin as I rediscovered Peter Gabriel and Talking Heads, acts who beat Paul Simon’s overrated Graceland by almost a decade.
As for Johnny, he a did a lot to help raise the profile of the great music South Africans make even if he’ll probably be branded as another White Savior. Still, thanks for what you did via music and showing that not all Whites are racist assholes.
