KMAG finally reaches 17,000 songs!

I finally, finally got my stream and source material for the podcasts up to this long overdue number; what it should’ve been by August 7, 2017! Looking back…hey, I hit 16,000 a little over a year ago. I’m getting better at this! I’m only six years or so behind. A major help recently has been another side project for Series 1 of the KMAG podcasts, the lost years. If you care to know, the majority (1-16) were made from the end of 1992 to early 1994. Then I regained some inspiration, seeing a Peter Murphy video at JC Penney’s, to bang out three more (17-19) in the Summer of 1995. Only regained enough energy, suggestions and time to make one (20) for commuting several times between Austin and Houston until Doc left for Japan in 1996. I still wonder why I never bothered to make any when I had some free time in 1997 or the slight abundance in 1998 while I was packing for Austin in my escape from Really-Dull, NC. It would’ve been cool to have a little “soundtrack” for those long drives with each year. I never stopped buying new stuff to pack them with “currents.”

Fear no longer! While I’m making those other ‘missing’ greatest hits for the Nineties (1998 is in flux and I hope the Aughts will gel), I started poking through the holes in KMAG’s master playlist and found additional tracks from my album collection, many which were, hmm…quite an oversight on my part. I’m also getting better at ‘Find & Replace’ commands in BBEdit and Pages to tweak my algorithm so the streaming would randomize like it were the missing year. By year’s end, KMAG will have an episode put together as if it were 1997!

Until next time, on to 18,000! Suck it FM radio with your crap, Lee Abrams bullshit!

Stars lose game three

I finally made it to a playoff game last night. My first-place Stars swept the Rockford Icehogs so they’re facing the Milwaukee Admirals, a team that has given them a hard time all season. It’s pretty impressive we beat them to take the division too; we had more points but they had more outright victories. Last weekend, the Admirals didn’t give up home advantage as easily, making my Stars come home with a 1-1 situation.

The game was worrisome. For a first-place, division winner, our PP was sloppy and the Stars were behind most of the night. They did finally pull ahead then blew their lead near the end. The souring moment came near the third period’s conclusion, they scored while we were pushing for overtime.

I hope the pressure of winning or staying home inspires them to try harder Friday. We haven’t hoisted the Calder Cup in nine years and we haven’t been to the championship since 2018, a 4-3 heartbreak loss to the Toronto Marlies. Then we have to face the winner of the cry-baby California Division, the teams responsible for the percentage system and shortening the season.

The Texas DPS occupation of Austin is pausing

Sadly, it isn’t due to them being unwelcome and unnecessary. Governor Shit-Bag needs them redeployed to the border to prevent more brown people from coming into Amerika, unless they’re willing to work for less than the domestics he already employs. I say good riddance. These mostly out-of-town bubbas were of no use. They just drove up arrests and stops for matters even APD found trivial. They promise to return as the city is ‘short’ on cops when the smarter way to spend our taxes would be on development for the people and their neighborhoods, namely affordable housing, not featherbedding rich assholes who don’t need yet they bring more low-paying jerbs, adding the strain on our systems. Another money-saving step would be firing and imprisoning murderous, psycho cops with their union helping foot the bill on the settlements.

History of the World: Part 1

When I saw that Hulu was bankrolling the long awaited sequel that wasn’t really supposed to happen, it was part of the joke, I was excited. After watching a few, I couldn’t finish this Part 2 because it was sadly uneven and I’ve grown into an old-guy fan of accurate History; blatant inaccuracies annoy me. Too many movies trying to cover these subject matters make people dumber, now musicals as well. A super sad example, worse than the shitty ‘musical’ Hamilton, even the younger people of Uganda believe The King of Scotland is spot on about the terrors of Idi Amin.

Then the film to inspire it all popped up on Hulu! I was stoked! I hadn’t seen it since I was a freshman in high school. I remember clearly watching it on HBO with my brother and dad on our portable color TV in Houston circa 1982. We still giggled and laughed despite friends and classmates having already quoted the best parts to death on the playground while it was in theaters the previous Summer.

What was I thinking? Oh, I was 13 would be my excuse and today I have to say Siskel & Ebert were right to give this a thumbs down. Theater? No. Cable? Sure. I now understand what their gripes were, Brooks’ approach of shotgunning jokes is great but he didn’t really put this through enough workshops (of his peers) to find out what worked, especially after the Roman Empire material. Many bits are lowbrow even by Mel’s standards, namely the French Revolution part. As always, much didn’t age well given society’s improved mindset about homosexuals which I expect but the bit involving the chess pieces, gross.

I doubt Mel will be cancelled over this resurfacing to a wider audience. This same audience which will get its collective undies in a knot won’t watch anyway. I doubt they have any clue what the movie is parodying. Hell, when History was released in 1981, the majority of the then modern audience didn’t know about Hollywood’s love of Bible/History Epics made in the Fifties and Sixties. So its point went over many heads as either another crass comedy or collection of dirty jokes to requote on the playground or water color.

In light of last Friday…

The cats will have to find a different way to kills us now. Fire and gas asphyxiation are now both off the table. The one dial we removed doesn’t operate anything we used on a regular basis, so I’m good.

Jennifer rejuvenated the door!

Great color choice but I’m more biased on liking the sign to keep the sales and Big Jesus people away. She threw in a welcome mat which probably will cause mixed signals with the shills I don’t want knocking on my door!

Maybe cats are evil at their core…

A rare good thing about getting older, is my need to get up every two-to-three hours to piss while you youngsters stay asleep, was it allowed me to wake up quickly when the smoke detectors made their obnoxious noises. Rushing to the kitchen, smelling the smoke, I saw the fire on the stove top. Seems, one of the cats, most likely Nubby because he’s an asshole, jumped up in his never-ending quest to eat, turned one of the dials to fire up the gas. Presto! Torching the boxes of food that should never be there. The extinguisher my ex left behind was worthless. Eventually we got it put out before it did any serious damage or harm. Isis, who loves to sleep on the cabinets above was traumatized a bit so she let me comfort her. The others were standing around like the sociopaths they are thinking, “Oh! You’re up! So you’ll start feeding us?!” None were injured which was a relief. My blisters surfaced by late morning to show my stupidity.

Next up this weekend. New extinguishers for the house! Once they’re used, they’re useless in the future. Jennifer also put in an order to have gizmos on the dials to prevent this again. I also made an edict of no more shit on the stove top.

Why Amerika must have mandatory retirement ages in gov’t

This other worthless mummy or bag of skin and lobbyist money, finally returned to Congress. I guess her staffers were ordered by K Street to do something or else the checks would stop coming. Christ! I don’t think Senator Crypt Keeper has a clue on where the hell she is let alone what she’s voting for, dinner being at 4 or 4:30! In addition to having the no sensible gun control and the worst healthcare system in the West, Amerika also lacks a mandatory retirement age for elected or appointed officials. Given how greedy and self-centered the Boomers are…all their fucking lives, is it small wonder they are no different in leading our nation into the grave, taking us all with them?

Now some of you apologists are saying, after the usual knee-jerk comments about this being anti-something despite the obvious damage having people who can’t even operate a TV remote being allowed to decide our collective fates…but Steve, when you get ‘up there,’ you wouldn’t be (or won’t) be willing to abdicate your power to the Mills and Gen Z when its really their turn! Umm, here’s where you’re dead wrong. I agree, power is the ultimate aphrodisiac, a quote often credited to the immortal war criminal Henry Kissenger (now 100 while numerous good people died young). If my track record with music is a good, indicator, you’re dead wrong. I will more than happily step aside to let the future with even more skin in the game take the helm. I hope that if I have done a good job, my advice will be sought out from time to time while my mental capacities are intact. Eventually, I expect them to go completely their own way as they’ve gained enough experience and wisdom so I can wind down my affairs…in the ruins of what used to be the wealthiest civilization in known History, until people like Feinstein pissed it away.

I’m not your T-shirrrrrrrrrrt!

It has been probably years since I posted one of my shirt acquisitions but maybe this fun one of Chowder will bring it back as a trend. I found this at a store I’ve never heard of called Box Lunch. Originally I wanted the Ed, Edd & Eddy yet they lacked my girth, really a standard XL because America won’t just face our weight issues, go with numbers which reflect our measurements.

Anyway, I loved this show! I guess the shirts exist to tap into all the nostalgia Gen Z is beginning to experience as they’re hitting their twenties.

Instead of sensible gun control, we get this in Amerika

This is how pathetic the Amerikan gubmint is and what thoughts & prayers results in. Despite the clear evidence showing how more guns makes the country less safe, the Republican bullshit talking point about good guys with guns being deprived of getting to play Dirty Harry proliferates! Those ammosexuals gotta’ have their surrogate genitals to overcompensate!

Below is a chart showing recently how the USA is on track to exceed past records…

…we’re number one! We’re number one! How I wish today’s kids didn’t need to practice “active-shooter drills” at school. How I wish being shot to death wasn’t a leading cause of death for today’s kids. But assholes like my cousin Ron believe his right to own a small armory to “protect” himself from drag queens in black helicopters and Chinese Mexicans handing out free fentanyl overrides everybody else’s personal safety. Little does he recall how the non-existent Lefty Socialist gubmint could just kill him more easily with a drone. So much for being in the Navy for 12 years. Oh right, he was only a mechanic, aka an armchair trooper, not a real commando who saw any action.

I think the EU should hijack this PSA and label it Why Visiting America is a Bad Idea. Sorry non-Americans, please spend your tourist dollars somewhere safer until we get our collective shit together and finally have a real democracy which allows us to vote out shit birds like Turd Cruz and MTG.

RIP Frank Kozik

Sad to find out Frank died suddenly and he wasn’t very old, a mere 61, which is somewhat early in this era. If you think those PowerComputing posters look familiar, you’re right. In the Nineties, Frank was the go-to guy for album covers and tour posters with many great bands I love. The most memorable I think is Americana for the Offspring. As you can see, PowerComputing hired him to work his aesthetic of rebellion too. At the time, Apple was struggling against the tide and litany you often heard, “Apple is going out of business! So buy a Dell or HP!” PowerComputing led a noisy counteroffensive and refused to give up through these rather ‘angry’ posters which even said outright, Intel sucks.

The downside happened obviously. Kozik’s work became ubiquitous and cliché like Ed Hardy or tramp stamps (I prefer the German term, Arschgeweih…ass antlers). I figured he was smart, moved on to doing other stuff since younger bands have different tastes and styles.

Thanks for everything Frank, namely the rebellious stuff you made while I too was an employee at PowerComputing. It was fun to give the competition the bird via your art because the Mac OS remains superior. I see more Apple logos on portables, tablets and phones at Starbucks than the competitors.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret: Must See

The inaugural and probably most famous Judy Blume novel finally makes its debut on the big screen. I figured it had been at least a made-for-TV thing a couple times but Blume had repeatedly said no to every attempt until meeting James L Brooks and Kelly Fremon Craig. Good thing she agreed to them, Edge of Seventeen was a great movie so these two were the perfect combo to make Margaret happen.

A little backstory for me. I’ve never read the book. When I was a growing up as a tweener in the Seventies, it was a girl book. Contrary to the popular media portrayals of parochial schools, I don’t recall any of the six I attended ever banning a book. Hell, The Chocolate War was an assigned book for sophomores at Strake Jesuit. My female classmates still talked about Margaret in hushed tones. Obviously, I didn’t care and figured whatever they were reading was dumb compared to the movie novelizations of SciFi I preferred when I wasn’t playing kickball. By adulthood, I read what the gist was and thought, that’s fine. The primary topics are embarrassing yet they’re not obscene. All of us undergo what the protagonist is experiencing, especially the doubt and fear.

As for the plot, I think we’re mostly familiar with it after 50-plus years so I’ll not bother. The director/screenwriter did add some plot lines for Margaret’s parents, otherwise, I think it would be a rather short movie.

I did love it overall. I’m mostly grateful with the decision to keep the original setting of 1970 while not overdoing it on the trends, fashion, etc. to scream at the audience, “Look! It’s the early Seventies!” What they often do for the Eighties, everybody wears way too much neon. Margaret definitely belongs in what I call The John Hughes Canon, especially with casting children close to the ages they should be versus Hollywood finding young adults resembling kids (Ralph Maccio!). Craig did a fantastic job capturing the cruelty, the peer pressure, the wonder, etc. of the age too. Nobody is precocious or smarter than the adults as per SitComs. By staying true to the time period, us Gen Xers can remember the world that was before the Internet and cell phones, hopefully it won’t bore younger people accustomed to instant gratification and their short attention spans via TikTok.

Alamo Extras: Someone made a video for “What is Life”; ads for feminine products (’nuff said there); trailers for Now & Then and Mean Girls; Japanese TV involving a girl group who I guess young women can ask questions; PSA on “when it is happening”; people being asked on the street how they feel about the issue the movie will raise; the best one was a short educational film involving a young woman experiencing the change and how her boyfriend…Jonathan Banks! reacts. Yes, Jonathan Banks, aka Mike Ehrmantraut from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul along with numerous other heavies he’s played over the years.

More instances of no good guys in sight

It’s a good thing the Republicans keep introducing laws to make it even easier for nut jobs, ammosexuals, disgruntled exes and white supremacists to buy guns. Seems that their plan for vigilantes to counter what’s happening is falling short. To all my friends who own guns out of their paranoid sense of self defense, reconsider how your viewpoint is contributing to a problem that is exclusive to the United States and pretty rare with the other countries classified as the West.

Oh, I have a counter to the crap brought up about suicides too. Even if you removed those sad, tragic deaths, the US still has a huge lead over the other nations. Besides, I would like to ask the ammosexuals…so you continue to push for the proliferation of guns despite how many self-inflected deaths they cause? Ergo, you’re pro-suicide? Can’t wait to see their thick heads explode.

Gareth Reynolds is coming to Austin but sadly without José

A fan made this cool logo! No, that’s not my cat Agamemnon, it’s Gareth’s cat Josél so I figure they’re distant cousins given their appearance, cute disposition and love of food. The co-host of The Dollop is giving Austin another chance by bringing his hilarious stand-up next weekend at the relatively new Cap City Comedy Club. I’m so wanting to go. I do hope he has shirts made of this since all I could spare in Vegas was a cool pin. Should Gareth being coming to your town, see him. You’ll piss yourself laughing.

GOP needs a wahbulance May ’23 edition

Republicans and their allies never grow tired of being wrong about everything. Firstly, I doubt there’s a solid definition of counter culture. It’s more of a moving target and it’s also just what ever puts old people’s undies in a knot. Secondly, to each their own as the 2023 picture is pretty universal with politics. Those who prefer to be in a DINK situation are all over the spectrum too. Besides, numerous uncool Republicans have tats now.
